Lead by the professor Han Cheng from the Fonts Research Lab in the School of Art and Design, this group of projects investigate new potentialities for design to peruse written language more than just a tool, and rather treat it as repository of cultural heritage on par with other aspects of either material or visual nature. 同题参见

This experimental research has taken the Classic Yi Script as a subject (as opposed to modern Yi which was introduced in the 19070s), an ancient form of writing used by the Yi People, one of China’s most populous ethnic groups that lives mostly in the hillside southern regions (like Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou).  同题参见

Classic Yi is a sinoform script whose use both in spoken and written form is fast disappearing, partially as a result of a lack of its archival systematization. 

It is the complexities of this ancient language and its intrinsic connection with the Yi people’s cultural traditions, that the various projects explore, in the attempt to rediscover ways in which the visual, material and performative aspects of linguistic expression become involved in the transmission and embodiment of cultural identity.

Five aspects of Yi culture have been chosen as explorative avenues, namely sacrifices and divination rituals, symbolic patterns found in textiles and costumes, visual compositions found on ceramic ware, the Bimo figure, a priest central to the execution of ancestral rituals, and traditional Yi medicine. 

Rooted in animistic faith, rich in collective rituals of shamanistic nature, the connection between Yi culture and its script is not merely instrumental – designs in this section explore contemporary ways to communicate these complexities and develop tools for its dissemination and thus its survival, among the younger generations of urban Chinese. 

Working with another aspect of preservation, the project developed by Dou is a continuation of the ongoing archival and production work undertaken by the Lab in developing new typographic tools for modern Chinese language that being a ideogrammatic script, needs constant updating in connection to the shifting planes of digital and print communication.

这项实验研究将经典彝族文字作为主题（与20世纪70年代引入的现代彝文作对比），是彝族所使用的一种古老的写作形式，彝族是中国人口最多的少数民族之一，主要生活在南部山区（如四川、云南和贵州）。

彝文是一种楷书，部分原因在于缺乏档案系统化。其口头和书面形式的使用正在迅速消失，

试图重新发现涉及文化身份传播与体现的语言表达的视觉、物质和表演性方法。项目研究这种古老语言的复杂性及其与彝族文化传统的内在联系，

将彝族文化的五大方面选作探索性途径，即祭祀和占卜仪式、纺织品和服饰中的象征图案、陶瓷器皿上的视觉构图、毕摩形象、主持祖先仪式的中心祭司，以及传统的彝族医学。

根植于万物有灵的信仰，富有萨满教性质的集体仪式，彝族文化与其文字之间的联系不仅仅体现在工具性方面——本节当中的设计专门研究传达这些复杂性的现代化方法，并开发了在年轻一代的城市中国人当中传播这种复杂性及其存续的工具。

在研究保护的另一个方面，正在进行的档案和制作工作的一种延续，窦开发的项目是实验室在开发适用于现代汉语（作为表意文字脚本）的全新印刷工具过程中，需要在数字化与印刷文字转换方面持续更新。
